DUBUQUE, Iowa (LifeSiteNews) – In a video message to the Coalition for Canceled Priests, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò declared that the “entire general staff of the Catholic Church has revealed itself to be allied with the enemy,” and urged the lay faithful to support priests who are “victims of persecution and of canonical abuses” in a kind of underground church.
The former apostolic nuncio made the comments via video message to more than 800 Catholics in Dubuque, Iowa, who had gathered September 22 in support of canceled Priests. The annual fundraiser for Aquinas Communications was attended by the Coalition for Canceled Priests (CFCP), a lay-led group formed to support “canceled” priests who boldly proclaim the Catholic faith, in an attempt to resist the “abuse of power by errant bishops and provide much needed financial support to innocent, faithful priestly servants of Holy Mother Church.”
Addressing the assembled Catholics, as well as recently “canceled” Fr. James Altman present at the event, the archbishop spoke on the “serious crisis” afflicting the Church, noting that “the Catholic Hierarchy has failed in the serious obligations of its apostolic mission and is in a large part corrupt.”
