ABC’s Ted Koppel

For several years independent authors and alternative news media have sought to raise awareness of the possibility that an attack on one or more of America’s three antiquated electrical grids could result in the end of society as we know it. Now veteran broadcast journalist Ted Koppel has authored a book (or perhaps more accurately lent his name to a ghost-written book) on this very threat–indeed one that’s been looming for years, even as it remains almost completely ignored by US political leaders.

Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath will be published by Penguin/Random House on October 27. “In this tour de force of investigative reporting,” the book’s description reads.

Ted Koppel reveals that a major cyberattack on America’s power grid is not only possible but likely, that it would be devastating, and that the United States is shockingly unprepared.

Imagine a blackout lasting not days, but weeks or months. Tens of millions of people over several states are affected. For those without access to a generator, there is no running water, no sewage, no refrigeration or light. Food and medical supplies are dwindling. Devices we rely on have gone dark. Banks no longer function, looting is widespread, and law and order are being tested as never before.

It isn’t just a scenario. A well-designed attack on just one of the nation’s three electric power grids could cripple much of our infrastructure—and in the age of cyberwarfare, a laptop has become the only necessary weapon. Several nations hostile to the United States could launch such an assault at any time … And yet, as Koppel makes clear, the federal government, while well prepared for natural disasters, has no plan for the aftermath of an attack on the power grid. The current Secretary of Homeland Security suggests keeping a battery-powered radio.

While the book acknowledges efforts of “the nation’s estimated three million ‘preppers'”–it is curious that this major concern is being tossed in the American public’s lap as east-west tensions eclipse their cold war highs. This may have to do with more-than-subtle “predictive programming” preceding a shutdown that will be blamed on one or more geopolitical rivals, which is difficult to discern in such unconventional warfare.

Such a work should also be approached with the knowledge that the US Congress alongside the Bush and Obama administrations 41VaF1CYhEL._SX327_BO1,204,203,200_covertly legislated and spent billions on the implementation of a “smart grid” boondoggle that does nothing in terms of safeguarding the country against such scenarios (See, for example, “Media Blackout on US ‘Smart Grid Deployment,” MHB, February 19, 2015).

Of course, the book is also being touted by several national security luminaries–including Defense and Central Intelligence Director Leon Panetta and NSA director Keith Alexander–as a “wake up call”, even though they’ve no doubt known about this danger for years and failed to advocate for a program that could mitigate a cataclysmic breakdown of civil society should such an even occur. “Ted Koppel has written an important wake-up call for America on the threat of a crippling cyberattack,” Panetta writes. “The danger we face right now is great, but so is the failure to acknowledge that the threat exists at all.”

Additional blurbs are reproduced below.

“Lights Out illuminates one of the greatest vulnerabilities to our nation – a cyberattack on our power grid. It is a wake-up call for all of us. We are the nation that created the internet; we should be the first to secure it. This powerful book could be the catalyst for just such a change.”
–GENERAL (RET.) KEITH ALEXANDER, former director of the National Security Agency

“A bold enumeration of the challenges posed by the digital age; an appeal to safeguard new instruments of human flourishing by studying the ways in which they could be exploited.”
—HENRY A. KISSINGER

“Ted Koppel’s unparalleled reporting skills are on full display in Lights Out. A fascinating and frightening look at just how vulnerable we are to a cyberattack.”
–ANDERSON COOPER

“When the lights go out after the cyberattack, this is the book everyone will read.”
–RICHARD A. CLARKE, author of Cyber War and former National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counter-terrorism

“Lights Out is a timely warning about the vulnerability of America to a massive cyberattack that would cripple all we take for granted – electricity, communication, transportation. This is not science fiction. Hats off to Ted Koppel for putting us all on alert.”
–TOM BROKAW

“Try to imagine what a malevolent government, armed with the latest computer sophistication, could do to another nation’s complex and entirely digital-dependent economy and social infrastructure. Fortunately, Ted Koppel has imagined it for us. We have been warned.”
–GEORGE F. WILL

“Without a single bullet, bomb, or missile, a foreign enemy can now launch a devastating attack on the United States. Koppel explores how cyberwarfare threatens all of us, assesses the risks, criticizes the lack of government action, and finds praise for the Mormon way of disaster preparedness. I hope he’s wrong about the danger but fear he’s right on the mark.”
–ERIC SCHLOSSER, author of Command and Control and Fast Food Nation

“As readers would expect from Ted Koppel, Lights Out is dramatic but not hyped, tied to today’s news of shaky infrastructure and cyber attacks but also forward looking. This is an engrossing and significant book.”
—JAMES FALLOWS, national correspondent, The Atlantic; author of China Airborne

“In Lights Out, Ted Koppel uses his profound journalistic talents to raise pressing questions about our nation’s aging electrical grid. Through interview after interview with leading experts, Koppel paints a compelling picture of the impact cyberattacks may have on the grid. The book reveals the vulnerability of perhaps the most critical of all the infrastructures of our modern society: the electricity that keeps our modern society humming along.”

  1. An ominous threat, especially considering the names of the figures that blurb this book. There is really no defense if the power system chooses to stage a false flag, blaming Russia, Iran, or the Terrorists for an electricity shutdown which requires an Emergency Government.

What it would do is Shock and Awe the population as did 9/11-anthrax, with the added effect of isolating people from each other, leaving ruling power as the only organized force.

The effect has be heightened by going to war, as it was in 9/11. This can initiate a new form of despotism different from those in the past, where one NEEDS to rely on the ruling institutional despot.

In world power relations, China might well go along with it, not only because of the nuclear threat, but because it would leave China as the world’s leading power. But this would not be conceded for at least a few years by the American oligarchy, so this may not be an immediate threat.

But at first glance, I don’t see any credible counter to it by the American people. There would have to be a trans-national alliance to oppose an Emergency Government, and if it were institutionalized correctly, this would be very difficult to form.

I thought the preppers were crazy alarmists; I don’t think so now. Dmitri Orlov, who runs ClubOrlov, predicated on economic collapse, bought a boat which he now lives on. He claims that a USA economic collapse will be much worse than the Soviet Union collapse because of the different social and economic system. He could be right.

  2. I suspect that this book was finally written to respond to public awakening, and I fear that the solutions given will still leave doors wide open so that we still are just as endangered. Promoters of the NWO and destruction of our country would have it no other way.
Does the book demand the production and sufficient stock of the transformers needed for restoration of power? Today, China has whatever supply is available.
Was protection of our nuclear power plants considered? As currently built, energy from petroleum or coal is needed to provide the electricity for the cooling systems. Without it, we will be subjected, ironically, to more than 100 plants going through a China syndrome, hence, destruction of the United States.

  3. We have seen the immigration by design as desired by TPTB. With Cuban Mariel II in progress and the Syrian (ISIS) influx coming. Obama nor Bush were ordered to call for interior infrastructure as the money needed to build foreign centers in Iraq and Afghanistan took priorites like the US Corporation and pipelines.

In both admins, they could have solved the problem by domestic renovations in a TVA type program. It would have gone a long way to solve unemployment, crime, budget, tax base and revenues and curbed the welfare entitlement sucking sound that is deafening now. But anybody thinking this is not by design as part of the ‘transformation’ to a global authority and a dependent slave state is living in a delusion.

The reality is we make nothing here anymore. We’d have to import everything in order to repair or rebuild the infrastructure but that is not possible as it would bolster the commodities and fair trade of sovereign countries which they seek to destroy with TPP, TTIP and the WTO global corptocracy who see fair trade and independence as competition.
My only question is will they false flag it with their ISIS creation, a 4th world war or some cosmic fabrication from the Project Bluebeam team.

  4. The same sinister individuals who produced 9/11 can certainly cripple the U.S. power system. Indeed, this would yield to a sharp degradation of the quality of life, and probably to much fear and many premature deaths,

On the plus side, 9/11-cognizant people would quickly fault for this catastrophe the same elusive entity that engineered 9/11 and may find their skeptical acquaintances more receptive to the idea that Building 7’s videos resemble a controlled demolition’s.

It bears remembering that if the global Masters of disinformation did not push hysteria, discerning people could not teach it. The more hysteria, the harder life is, but the easier the hysteria is to teach.

    Love,

  5. Why now? Why not? One more bogeyman to scare us. One more reason to tax us into submission. One more reason for everyone to keep an eye on everyone.

After more than a decade, much of America has grown bored and weary with the never ending war on terror. But turn out our lights? Turn out our INTERNET? Who wouldn’t give a buck or two out of every paycheck to defend against that threat?

    1. The bulk of Americans are not bored or weary of the war on terror, they are virtually unaware of its existence for heavens sake. Laziness comes not from overindulgence in fact finding, it comes from the plethora of Tom Cruise movies.
That said, Americans will fall for the lies of the distinguished NWO’ers who have endorsed this book. These people have “graciously sent in their comments”, yet they are all dire enemies of the American people. Would you quote Joseph Mengele in your new book on Medical Remedies?

      1. Unaware of its existence? That’s an odd response. The idea that we are in a terror war without borders has been imprinted on us daily for 14 years.

No, many have become numb to it. Some still fall for the steady propaganda, but that number is smaller than you think. And smaller every day.

        1. But nobody organizes against it. The media will Never cover it.

It just amazes me that from the Executive Branch including Congress to the MSM to even Local LE, they are “In” on it.

Is is just the Money? Do they believe fake shootings will benefit us ?

Or, are they they just scared, blackmailed, greedy or all of the above.

How do you fight all these organizations?

        2. It just dawned on me.

I just described the “Beast System” in my last comment.

How do we fight them,it, him? Who can make war with it?

          Para phrasing on course.

        3. Paraphrasing of course.

Correction, even tho I don’t give a rats a$$ just hate being corrected by…..

  6. A lights out scenario is exactly what was planned back in October 2013, with the order to transport three weapons from Texas to South Carolina that would be used for EMPs. Remember that cryptic statement made by Lindsey Graham about a nuke going off in Charleston harbor if we didn’t go to war in Syria? It was to be done at a time when the sun would produce the Compton Effect. From what I understand, one of the weapons was taken way out in the Atlantic to a depth of 10 miles and detonated, which showed up as a small earthquake on USGS. Putin made a comment about it a day or so after, and indicated that he knew what it really was. Several high ranking military were dismissed for not doing what they were told.

    1. Well, timing is everything. It is pretty obvious that they’ve decided that the Islam gig is burning itself (and Islam) out pretty quickly. There’s a new enemy in town…Russia. Of course you can throw China in there as well.

Just as certain shootings are timed to cover major embarrassments like bombing hospitals, another major false flag, with Russia as the patsy might be just what the doctor ordered.

So, between drowning us in debt, destroying everything the country once stood for, smothering us in immigrants and importing cheap labor to take our jobs, we have this.

How’s that for performance? The obvious goal is total destruction. They are doing a marvelous job. Hope has been replaced with austerity.

In all of these “democracies”, the citizens want no part of what they’re selling. Still, there they are. They have to arm and militarize thugs to control the people they work for. Does anyone else find that strange?

      1. Lophatt I have held the view for a long time that America is being set up in a manner very similiar to what befell nazi Germany. We are the armed wing of the NWO.

It would not be a big surprise if many nations joined together after tiring of our war criminals and surrounded this place and bombed it into the stone age. It would nice to think we could get this country back on track but looking around at the idiots that populate America, the scenario seems very doubtful.

You can take a look around on the net on most any forum, any country and Americans will be the most clueless there, with the most assiduously asinine comments. We have seen the enemy and the enemy is us.

  7. The best way to fight evil, is to live your life, joyfully, generously, remember most people are good, not evil, including your friends and neighbors. Look out for each other, become self-sustaining and live off the grid as much as possible. Get back to basics, gardening, buying local whenever possible, turn off the boob-tube and don’t drink the Kool-Aid!

  8. The nuclear plants would pollute everything. I used to want the lights to go out, to get people moving, but found out about that. Surely they wouldn’t do that to those plants! With their love of real-estate! (I don’t interpret everyone killing each other, rather the opposite. Unless they hire people to do it which apparently is easy to do here! Also, not during storms, but for years they’ve been turning our lights out for hours at a time, it’s a mixed demographic, I argue to see what we’d do. Nothing we talked and shared time. They stopped doing it too..)

  9. Ted Koppel’s book, “Lights Out: A Cyberattack,” is authored toward a political end, as Professor Tracy emphasizes. One political objective may be for authorities to take control of an issue away from unofficial sources by creating a media blitz. This appears to be the case in Patrick Kennedy’s renewed campaign to federally encompass the field of “mental health.”

You may know Patrick Kennedy as the scion of the famous political family who crashed his car into a cement barrier near Capitol Hill because he was “disoriented” by his prescription medications. Kennedy has a history since adolescence of “disorienting” substance use, coupled with bad behavior. As a teenager, he was an early adopter of the label “bipolar,” and used it to describe his maladjustments.

Now, he is parlaying his history and that of his family into a sweeping vision of federally mandated “mental health” that hopes to capture a ratio of one in five people that he can cram into the category of “brain disease.” One in five.

If you follow Sue’s posts here at MHB, you’re aware of Murphy’s bill, the “Helping Families In Mental Health Crisis Act.” Well, this is more of the same, only Kennedy has mounted a media blitz from his famous name that Murphy can only envy.

    Here’s Kennedy’s new book:
    http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2015/news/151019/pa-kennedy-2-435.jpg

It’s called a memoir and it’s supposed to appeal to Kennedy family fans/gossipers, but it is the loss leader on a raft of media that all call for his mental health agenda, including at least four elaborate websites founded by Kennedy himself.

    These include:
His eponymous site, http://www.patrickjkennedy.net/, in which he coordinates all his “causes.”

“The Kennedy Forum,” established 2014, which claims it “unites the community of mental health.” https://www.thekennedyforum.org/

The One Mind Organization, which is “Confronting the Brain Health Epidemic” which will focus on getting military service people diagnoses of PTS (post traumatic stress) and TBI (traumatic brain injury) http://onemind.org/

And finally there’s “SAM, Smart Approaches to Marijuana, Preventing Another Big Tobacco” https://learnaboutsam.org/

SAM is where Kennedy reveals that his true addiction is to Big Pharma and not to their little pills.

Patrick Kennedy wants to ban marijuana, especially medical marijuana. His claim is that cannabis use leads to mental illness. Read these choice quotes:

“Kennedy believes there is “an epidemic in this country of epic dimensions when it comes to alcohol and drugs.” He’d like to treat it all, but he’s convinced that the single biggest threat to America’s mental health is free-market marijuana.”

“The science tells the story,” he says, breaking into an attack on the idea that marijuana is safer than alcohol. He ticks through studies showing that smoked marijuana is “associated with” or “linked to” IQ loss, psychosis, and self-reported dissatisfaction with life. “It takes you to the same place as cocaine or heroin,” he often adds. “It just takes longer.”

    https://learnaboutsam.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/sam-logo-fix-no-bulb.png

“Last January Kennedy went public with his beliefs, launching Smart Approaches to Marijuana, or Project SAM, a campaign to keep marijuana illegal… it might be the most potent campaign since Nancy Reagan made marijuana the centerpiece of her “Just say no” tour three decades ago.”

“Incarceration is a powerful motivator,” says Kennedy, who after a prescription drug-related car crash in 2006 spent a year urinating in front of a probation officer three times a week.”

“As a member of Congress, Kennedy voted in favor of allowing patients access to pot but now says he was wrong. He’d like to repeal every law that treats smoked marijuana as medicine. Instead he hopes to see pharmaceutical-grade cannabis satisfy an FDA approval process and sell as a patch or pill. “We don’t smoke opium for morphine… we don’t need to smoke pot for medicine.”
