A Turning in the American Political Road Is Almost at Hand

The only way to make any sense of the fierce crosscurrents sweeping over American political life now is to watch two trends that are only slightly connected.

First is the continuing great national sense of relief that the chaos and pandemonium of the Trump era is over. There are not nightly cascades of provocative and frequently outrageous tweets and the days are not filled with confrontations in which the president’s enemies assault him like picadors, and he rises to every challenge like a compulsive single combat warrior.

Public Health Authorities Say COVID Immunity Unattainable via Vaccination

US public health officialdom has relented in its claim that ‘herd immunity’ should be achievable if enough people line up to get their shot[s]. From The Hill:

Public health experts and scientists say they do not believe herd immunity is attainable for the near future due to dropping COVID-19 vaccination rates, The New York Times reports.

According to the experts who spoke with the Times, the coronavirus will more likely become a constant but manageable threat in the U.S. for several more years. New COVID-19 strains are also reportedly developing too quickly for herd immunity to be reasonably expected.

“The virus is unlikely to go away,” Emory University evolutionary biologist Rustom Antia told the newspaper. “But we want to do all we can to check that it’s likely to become a mild infection.”

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert and President Biden‘s chief medical adviser, acknowledged a shift in thinking by experts who had once believed achieving herd immunity by summer was a possibility.

At the same time, The New York Times‘ May 1 edition suggests targeting rural Christian Americans, a demographic perceived by DC and media elites as the most suspicious (critically-minded) and resistant of the experimental COVID19 inoculation.

Critical Race Theory Is About to Face Its Day(s) in Court

As recently as last summer, few people outside academia had heard of critical race theory, whose central claim is that racism, not liberty, is the founding value and guiding vision of American society. Then, President Trump issued an executive order last September banning the teaching of this “malign ideology” to federal employees and federal contractors.

Trump’s ban was blocked by a federal judge in December and immediately revoked by Joe Biden upon occupying the White House in January. Since then, federal agencies and federal contractors have resumed staff training on unconscious bias, microaggressions, systemic racism and white privilege – some of the most common but also most disputed concepts associated with the four-decade-old academic theory.

Defense Department’s ‘extremists’ happen to look exactly like Trump voters

The Biden administration is on the offensive against extremism.  However, it is having trouble defining the term.

The newly installed defense secretary, Lloyd Austin, has signed a memo ordering several “immediate actions,” including military-wide “stand downs,” to weed out “extremism” in the ranks of the military.  Actions also included a review of and update to the DoD’s definition of extremism and a review and standardization of the screening questionnaire — “[t]o solicit specific information about current or previous extremist behavior, and to clarify that any demonstrably false answers provided in response could form the basis for punitive action for fraudulent enlistment.”  Defense officials said the Pentagon is reversing Trump-era policies that banned transgender people from serving in the military.  The Pentagon will also issue new rules that will broaden transgender people’s access to medical care and cosmetic surgery to imitate members of the opposite sex.  Opposition to these policies may be considered extremist.

‘Instrument of the devil’: Priest sounds alarm on Equality Act

The popular South Carolina priest described the Equality Act as “the crown achievement” of the progressive movement, a movement “that hates organized religion” and “despises any true opposition.”

A Catholic priest recently called the Equality Act an “instrument of the devil” that would make religious organizations “target number one.”

“Our Congress is considering what is called the Equality Act, a massive exercise of irony. They want to push this Equality Act through and are making great efforts to do it quickly so that the American people don’t catch on,” said Fr. Jeffrey Kirby, pastor of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in South Carolina and a senior contributor at Crux.
