In March 2021 the Nuclear Threats Initiative co-conducted a “tabletop exercise” where a monkeypox pandemic was foisted on the global public in May 2022 that over the course of 18 months led to 3.2 billion cases and 271 million deaths.

The event was attended by “19 senior leaders and experts from across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe with decades of combined experience in public health, biotechnology industry, international security, and philanthropy” and “examined gaps in national and international biosecurity and pandemic preparedness architectures—exploring opportunities to improve prevention and response capabilities for high-consequence biological events.”
